Jane Small debuted her new photographic adventure series “Fairy Tales: A Floral Fantasy” at AIR Studio + Gallery in Glencoe, Illinois, March 15 through April 5.
Small shared, “Fairy Tales: A Floral Fantasy” is my artistic take on the alchemy of centuries-old fairy tales and the haunting beauty of flowers from the natural world. The idea for this series grew out of a childhood memory of my mother creating a doll for me out of the blooms of a Hollyhock plant; with the layered petals of the flower creating the doll’s gown and the flower’s bud becoming the doll’s fancy headpiece. I imagined the doll was Cinderella going to the ball and, to me, it was magic. Today I’ve attempted to recreate that magic by imagining the flowers that I love in a variety of favorite fairy tale settings. It is my hope that my work will inspire viewers to slow down, use their imaginations and take a closer look at the beautiful, incredible natural world that surrounds them. And also, to enjoy the fun of reading a fairy tale or two. The photos were all taken in a single shot, in miniature theatrical sets that I created, and are not the result of Photoshop layering or AI computer generation.”
